  1.  LHA- and LZX Archives and PMPro
  2.  ===============================

  4.   On many CD-ROM series LHA archives are widely used. Especially the
  5.   Aminet series which mainly consists of thousands of such archives,
  6.   while any single archive may also contain a number of files.
  7.   For the user, there is almost no chance to extract graphics from
  8.   these archives. Graphics, for example, are not only included in Aminet
  9.   related /PIX directories, but the archives of many programs or demo
  10.   versions of programs may also contain graphics, which the typical
  11.   user will never be able to examine (if you are not able to take some
  12.   days or weeks and extract each single archive and scan it for the
  13.   presence graphics).
  14.   PMPro now offers the unique facility to catalogue graphics formats in
  15.   LHA and LZX archives. Also, the ability to display, print, convert,
  16.   etc. such archived graphics will be automatically managed by PMPro. You
  17.   need no longer worry as all these graphics will be handled just like
  18.   common graphics, so that nearly any operation available for normal
  19.   graphics can also be applied for such archived graphics. There are also
  20.   some functions available in PMPro which allow you to archive (or add
  21.   to an archive) a number of marked/found graphics with LHA 
  22.   (function: searched/found - add to archive).

  24.   Thus you are now able to easily archive a large collection of graphics
  25.   from your hard disk and may save a lot of hard disk space, or reduce
  26.   the number of files on your hard drive, which will be useful in
  27.   conjunction with many disktools (DiskSalv, Undelete, defragmentation
  28.   programs, etc.)

  31.   Now some notes and information concerning LHA/LZX support of PMPro:

  33.   - The LHA/LZx support can be switched on/off via the
  34.     function: "Settings - generate catalog" 
  35.  
  36.   - When expanding a catalogue all LHA/LZx archives will be
  37.     scanned for graphics. Should these contain graphics, these will be
  38.     automatically catalogued. Working on a CD-ROM with thousands
  39.     of LHA archives (e.g. Aminet series) may take a lot of time,
  40.     since of course any single archive has to be unpacked first.
  41.     
  42.   - After cataloguing the archived graphics will be handled like normal   
  43.     graphics. This means that nearly all functions that can be applied to
  44.     a normal graphic will also work with archived graphics.
  45.     Thus a single mouse click may display, print, convert, process
  46.     or recopy these. Of course such graphics may also be directly
  47.     exported to other programs (user popup). Unpacking graphics is
  48.     handled by PMPro, so that you are not bothered with this process.

  50.   - To allow fast identification (whether a graphic is part of an archive
  51.     or not) during cataloguing the image description is automatically
  52.     used to store type and name of the corresponding archive.
  53.     By using the powerful search and sort algorithms of PMPro you may now
  54.     explicitly search for such graphics.
  55.     Also the information window contains an additional function
  56.     (Button Archives: INFO and QUICK), which is able to present you with
  57.     the complete archive content. This may be redirected for printer
  58.     output.

  60.   - But there also are some small restrictions concerning graphics, which
  61.     are part of an archive:
  62.  
  63.      - Deleting/Renaming such graphics does not work.
  64.      - Function Catalogue - Validating cannot recognise whether a graphic
  65.        is still in the archive. This is also true for updating of
  66.        catalogues.
  67.      - When recopying/converting whole graphic collections, the original
  68.        archives will not be deleted even if the graphics are part of
  69.        such archives (since it is possible other graphics which are part
  70.        of the same archive might be lost).
  71.      - Function SLIDESHOW skips such graphics (for reasons of delay time
  72.        when unpacking)

  75.  Note: The widely used lHA archiver is included and pre-installed with
  76.  PMPro. The less used LZX archives need their packer to be copied
  77.  to your C: directory. It may be found on nearly any Aminet CD, as
  78.  well as on many other Amiga CD-ROMs.
